Kingdom of Sound

The Kingdom of sound was a magical land, where everything made beautiful sounds. The princess was spoiled by sounds of birds chirping, bells ringing, and beautiful music all day long. One night, an evil wizard snuck into the kingdom and stole all of the sounds. He collected these sounds in little eggs, and began to run away into the night. On his way out of the kingdom, he stumbled and dropped some of his eggs.

The next morning as the princess awoke, she went downstairs to find her parents in the kitchen, silent. What ever will she do! She went outside and there was more silence. No birds, or bells, or singing. It was awful! As she walked outside, searching for her beloved sounds, she found some strange eggs. With the eggs there was a poem that read:

"I stole your sounds and they are mine I’ll have them til the end of time. The only way to get them out is to explain all sounds without a doubt."

The princess needs help identifying what is making the sounds inside of each egg.

Explore

Explore sound with these activities!

Use a rubber band on a plastic cup to see the vibrations

Use a pitch fork in water to see more vibrations

Use a slinky to demonstrate sound waves. Simulate volume and pitch with frequency and force.

Explain

Sound

Sound is created by vibrations. It moves through a medium, like air molecules in a room, wood molecules of a door, or water molecules in a river.

Pitch

Pitch is changed by the frequency of vibration. Fast vibrations make higher pitch sounds, and slow vibrations make lower pitch sounds.

Volume

Volume is affected by the amplitude of the vibrations

(how hard or soft they are)

Elaborate

Instrument

I created a instrument like a xylophone using various sizes of glass bottles. Tapping the bottles create sounds of different pitches and volumes.

Poem

Sound waves are cool

harsh waves are loud

they make lots of sound

soft waves are quiet

they are almost silent

High frequency waves make

high pitched sounds

low frequency waves make

low pitched sounds

Sound waves are cool

Evaluate

I would use explanations from students videos to gauge understanding. I know a student understands key concepts if they can explain pitch and volume. I would specifically look for words like "frequency" when describing pitch. I would look for a clear description of the difference in wavelengths between high, low, loud, and quiet sounds.
